Why did you decide to pursue a career as an attorney?
After college and before going to law school, I worked as a Legislative Aide for a State Senator in my home state of Connecticut. During that time, I not only grew more passionate about the political process, but I also became inspired by the idea of using my knowledge and skills to help others. I realized that the law is a powerful tool for advocacy and change, and I wanted to be in a position where I could actively contribute to making a positive impact, especially at a time when so much feels uncertain. The opportunity to advocate for people, solve complex problems, and shape outcomes that directly affect individuals and communities became my driving force and ultimately led me to pursue a legal career.
How do you build strong relationships with your colleagues and clients?
I believe that, whether it’s with colleagues or clients, people are people first, and everyone wants to feel safe, heard, and appreciated. I’m known for bringing a sense of humor into most of what I do, but what others might not realize is that I see humor as a way to build authentic connections with those around me. I always strive to understand the needs of others and find common ground, both professionally and personally. By doing so, I aim to establish a foundation of trust and credibility that strengthens my relationships with the people who matter most in any given situation.
How do you balance your professional and personal life, and what strategies do you use to maintain well-being and avoid burnout?
As women, we constantly struggle with the question: Am I doing enough? The key for me has been recognizing that balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about being intentional with my time and setting realistic expectations for myself. I make sure to prioritize what truly matters, both in my career and personal life, and I try to allow myself the flexibility to adjust when needed. Maintaining boundaries, taking time to recharge, and practicing self-compassion are essential strategies I use to avoid burnout. (It also helps to work in an environment that supports the prioritization of work-life balance!) It’s not always easy, but by being mindful of my limits and celebrating my accomplishments when they come, I’ve found a better way to manage both my professional responsibilities and personal well-being.
What qualities do you think make a great leader?
As a new lawyer focused on honing my skillset, I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with some truly exceptional leaders early on. The ones who stand out all share key qualities like patience, sincerity, and attentiveness. They actively engage with those who are less experienced, yet also give them the space to make their own decisions and chart their own path. What really sets a great leader apart though, is that they never make you feel diminished. Instead, they emphasize the importance of learning from every experience and always make you feel like a valued member of the team.
Where is your favorite place to take a vacation?
I grew up spending the better part of August at the Connecticut shore with my family and our close friends. Even now, I make it a priority to find time to get down there every summer. It’s been a fantastic tradition and one I look forward to every year.
How do you enjoy spending your spare time?
I’m fortunate to have an amazing family and a wonderful group of friends who make even the most mundane activities enjoyable. We love going out to eat, sharing good wine and cocktails, skiing, hiking, and spending time at the beach. Outside of that, I am obsessed with my family’s Portuguese Water Dog, Dewey, and I am happy spending my spare time doing whatever he wants to do.
