Women’s Initiative at Dain Torpy: Molly A. Myers
What drew you to focus your practice on commercial real estate law?
I was drawn to this area of law because of a commercial real estate development client I worked with very early on in my career. My supervising attorney entrusted me with significant responsibilities pertaining to the matters I was handling. I enjoyed learning about the client’s process and helping come up with solutions to problems. Also, I find it to be rewarding when I get to see development projects that I have worked on being completed on the ground. Actually seeing a tangible finished product is unique to certain practice areas, including commercial real estate.
How do you build strong relationships with your colleagues and clients?
I think that the foundation of these relationships is built on knowing, liking, and trusting each other. Understanding the client’s business and goals is also fundamental. Keeping up to date with our colleagues’ and clients’ accomplishments outside of work helps to connect in a more personal way too.
What qualities do you think make a great leader?
To me, a great leader is someone who is an expert in his or her field, authentic, approachable, adapts when change is needed, acts with integrity, and motivates others.
What is your favorite meal to cook?
Chicken paprikash with spaetzle. It’s one of my favorite comfort food recipes that my dad would make for our family when I was growing up. One time when he was reaching for the spices, he accidentally grabbed the chili powder instead of the paprika and we were all in for a surprise. Since then, we have been adding a hint of chili powder (in addition to the paprika called for by the recipe) for a little extra kick!
What advice would you give to other women who are interested in a career in commercial real estate law?
Find a mentor, whether that person is within or outside of your firm. Join industry groups and attend events. Start building relationships with people who work in commercial real estate early on so that you have a solid foundation and network when you get to the point in your career where you are in a decision-making position and need to rely on others who you know can meet the specific needs of your clients.
